For twenty years, the Troybery reading program has been inspiring Troy middle schoolers to become voracious readers by encouraging them to nominate, read, and vote on their favorite middle grade books published each year. To celebrate our 20th anniversary, the TSD middle school media specialists are encouraging students to read as many of the former 190 Troybery award nominees and winners as possible from October 1, 2019, to April 1, 2020. In order to track their reading, students can pick up a blue Troybery Challenge card from their ELA teacher. The Troybery Program began as a way for the Troy middle school media specialists to encourage students to read and vote on what they thought was the best book of the previous publishing year, instead of adults choosing the best books for awards like the Newbery or Caldicott. The Troybery section of the media center is always the most popular because Troybery books become students' and teachers' perennial favorites. Each month, Mrs. Chatel and Ms. Loch will announce a Troybery reading challenge. Students who complete the challenge can enter in a drawing to win monthly prizes. For the month of October, we are challenging students to read a staff member's favorite Troybery, a Troybery Horror book, and/or a Troybery Sports book. In March, students will vote on the best Troybery book in each genre. The top ten books will be up for the award of "Best Troybery Book Ever" when students vote again in April. Winners will be announced at our annual Troybery Awards ceremony on May 1, 2020, attended by 60 lucky students from each middle school. We are excited to announce that Troybery author Caroline Tung Richmond, who wrote 2019 Troybery Honor Book Live in Infamy, will be speaking following the ceremony about "How I Wrote a Book and How You Can, Too!" Also, one of the four middle schools with the most Troybery readers will win a visit from Ms. Richmond in the afternoon following the ceremony, where she will present "Choose Your Own Timeline: An Alternate History Adventure." Students will be able to purchase her books at our Scholastic Book Fairs this year and can get the books signed if they attend the Troybery ceremony or win the school author visit. You can find a list of all of the Troybery books here. Please encourage your child to take part in this exciting challenge! We also invite parents and the Troy community to read along with us. Please use #TroyberyTurns20 on social media to help us commemorate our 20th anniversary.
