Welcome to the 2018 school year! The TSD middle school Media Department is proud to announce the first group of potential books that has been chosen for our Troybery 2018 reading program, which can be found on our website here. A mock-Newbery program, the Troybery Program has encouraged Troy middle schoolers since 2000 to read the best middle grade books published that year and then vote on their favorites. Many fantastic books have won over the past 17 years, and we look forward to seeing what the TSD students think of our potentials for this year. Changes implemented to Troybery last year will continue into this one - we will start with a large list of potential Troyberys, and students will help narrow the list down to the top ten in March through a Troybery Madness tournament. The winner will be announced at the 18th Annual Troybery Awards Ceremony on April 27. How do books end up on our potential Troybery list? The media specialists seek input from students and teachers. Students can join the Troybery Committee Schoology Group (Access Code GWXVQ-JV9F4) or can submit titles for consideration here (must have a TSD account to login). When we hear students and teachers raving about a book, see students talking about the book on our Schoology group, or see many kids submitting the same book to our form, we will then add it to stack of books to consider. In other words, if your child had a book that he/she really thinks should be a Troybery, make sure he/she gets other kids talking about and reading it! There are many, many books published each year and only two media specialists, so we prioritize our reading to the books that that we hear about the most. For a book to be considered for the Troybery potentials list, it must be published in 2017, must be a middle grade book, and must be a stand-alone or first book in a series. We highly recommend that you review this list with your child and also familiarize yourself with the titles so that you can be sure your child is reading books appropriate for him/her and that meet your family guidelines. Our list includes high and low level books, a variety of genres, as well as titles more appropriate for mature readers noted with an asterisk. (We have done this to appeal to our 7th and 8th graders, who, according to our statistics, were less interested in participating in Troybery in the past because the books felt too "young" for them.) In the end, we will probably have around 20-30 titles to choose from, so your child will have numerous options and needs only to read three minimum to participate. We will only have five copies of each of these books to start out, so we appreciate you visiting the Troy Public Library or purchasing copies at our book fairs or at a book store to enable your child to get hands on a copy! Happy Troybery 2018!
After the ceremony ended, students in attendance were able to meet Marina Cohen, author of The Inn Between, and get a signed copy of her book. Mrs. Cohen played a trivia game with the students, asking tough questions about her book and rewarding students with fun prizes. To get down to the final Troybery winner, students cast 2,441 votes over 4 rounds of Troybery Madness voting. Overall, Troybery books were checked out 9,253 times this year. Troybery checkouts made up around 13% of all books checked out at each school. Troy School District middle school students certainly are avid readers, and the Troybery reading program continually motivates them, year after year. Thank you to our supporters! Many thanks to the middle school teachers and administrators who have been so supportive of this reading program for the past 17 years. We are also grateful to the PTO of each middle school, the Troy Women's Association, and the Board of Education for their support. The Troy Public Library has been instrumental in getting Troyberys into the hands of our students when the media center's shelves were empty. Many parent volunteers were invaluable during Troybery voting and the ceremony. We appreciate all of the authors who made videos for our students and who visited our students in person or via Skype. Finally, we thank the students and staff who participated in the program!
Troybery Madness Round 1 kicks off
troybery ceremony bigger and better than ever!Mrs. Chatel and Ms. Loch are excited to announce that this year’s Troybery ceremony on Friday, April 28 will be bigger and better than ever! Students who go to the ceremony will get to Skype with THREE potential Troybery authors, AND get to have lunch with author Marina Cohen, who wrote The Inn Between!
The names of the authors who will be Skyping with us will be revealed each week in March on the media center Schoology group. How do students get chosen to go to the ceremony? ELA teachers will be nominating their best readers from each class, and the media specialist will draw 30 names from that list. Or, students can create a Troybery project. Students who attend the ceremony should wear their school colors and bring a bag lunch. Punch and cookies will be provided. They should also bring questions to ask the authors. It will be an incredibly fun event for all in attendance! The Troy Middle School Media Centers are launching Troybery Madness 2017! We are doing something new for our Troybery reading program, now in our 17th year. We have a field of 32 potential Troybery books—students will help us narrow down to the top ten through voting each week during March is Reading month. Books will be in competition just like the NCAA March Madness tournament, except that we will stop at the Elite 8 and do a vote for 2 wildcard spots to make it ten total. In order to vote, students will need to read at least 3 books out of the 32. Students have until Feb. 28 to fill in their brackets, so now is the time to really start reading!!! On the Media Center Schoology Group in the Discussion section, there is a place to submit the completed bracket. Even if students have not read all 32 books, they can still try to guess which books are going to win! We will be giving gift certificates to our next Scholastic Book Fair to students who have a perfect bracket! We will also give prizes to CLASSES who have perfect brackets. Our ultimate goal is to get kids excited about and interested in reading. The voting starts March 1, so make sure your child has read at least 3 from this list in order to participate! Once we have narrowed it down to the top ten by March 14, students will have time to read those titles in order to vote for the final Troybery winner on April 19-20. The Troybery Award winner will be announced on April 28, 2017, at our annual ceremony. The Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to Smith's Media Center on December 5-9. With the theme of Bookaneer, Where Books are the Treasure, our library will be transformed into a pirate ship with decorations from the Troy High National Art Honor Society students. Your child will be receiving a parent letter and a sneak peek pamphlet about the hot items at the book fair. Or, you can also see the letter here. Thank you for your support of reading and the Boulan Media Center! Welcome to the new school year! We have exciting things happening in the Troy Middle School Media Centers with the launch of our new-and-improved 2017 Troybery Awards Program. For those of you who are new middle school parents and may not be familiar with Troybery, here is a brief history. For the past 16 years, the Troy middle school media specialists have chosen the top ten middle grade books of the year, encouraged students to read these books from January until April, and set up a voting program so that students could vote for the Troybery award-winner. Now in our 17th year of running the Troybery program, we have decided to make some changes to reflect feedback that we have received over the years as well as align with the goals of our English Language Arts teachers to create communities of readers at our schools. what is the "new" troybery?
We know that there are a lot of holes in our list--that's where the students come in. We would love for you and your child to scour the public library or bookstore to look for a book we might not have found yet. If your child finds something great, s/he can submit a recommendation here. We will keep updating the list of potential books until January. Who knows: your child could be the one who finds the next Troybery winner! how will students choose the winner? Our plan is that students will be able to read the books from now until March, when we will hold a March Madness-style tournament to narrow down the options to the usual top 10. Students will vote in April for the Troybery winner. The ceremony will take place on April 28, where the winner will be announced. are there any requirements? We are still requiring students to read three books to vote. However....the books could be any of the ones on our list of 20+ potential books. This will allow students to have more options rather than having to read three out of the top ten. If a student just wants to read all realistic fiction, that is totally fine. If s/he chooses one from each genre, great! Why are there stars by some of the book titles?A few of the books on the list are starred to mark them as "mature." They are books that would be better suited for 8th grade readers than 6th grade. In past years, we have noticed the phenomenon that participation in Troybery dwindles after 6th grade. We would like to get 8th graders excited about Troybery by including titles that would interest them. In no way are we saying that 6th graders need to read these titles. Please review the book list with your child and determine which books feel right for him or her. If you have any questions about the mature titles, please email your media specialist. Why don't you have copies of the books yet?Don't worry, we will have them soon! They are on order. As we see which books become popular, we will order more. We are not ordering 20 copies of every book since we have such a large list of books to start. Until then, your child could find the books at the public library, on MeLCat, on Amazon, or at the bookstore. What is #Troyberytuesday? On Tuesdays, we will be posting questions on the media center Schoology group about Troybery, as well as commenting on social media with the hashtag #TroyberyTuesday. Join in on the fun, and let's get the hashtag trending! Tweet pictures of your children reading Troyberys or share photos on Instagram of the books your child is reading. We look forward to a fun, new Troybery experience where students are helping us make the big decisions! how to use the TPL "e-card"Librarians from the Troy Public Library came to visit Boulan and Smith during the first week of June to advertise their summer programming. Be sure to join in on the fun by visiting www.troypl.org/summerlibrary on June 18 to sign up! Have you signed your child up for the TPL eLibrary card and are now wondering how your child will use it? First of all, it is an electronic "card," so you will not get a physical card, a login, or a password. Your child's eCard number is 212739 plus his/her student ID number. Second, the card number should work starting June 15. Please contact [email protected] if you opted in for the eCard and it still is not working after June 15. Thanks to our district partnering with the TPL, your child will have access to FREE eBooks and audio books to use all year round on his/her iPad. Here is how do it:
Any questions? Ask at the Troy Public Library for help, or check out information on the My TSD website. end of the year at Boulan and smith media centersMichigan Notable Books author Patrica Majher visited Boulan and Smith on June 10 to talk about her book Great Girls in Michigan History. Girls at both schools enjoyed reading her book and asking her questions about the women in her book as well as about being a writer. I hope you have a wonderful summer filled with great books! See you in the fall!
