New for Troybery 2015This year marks the district's 15th annual Troybery award. To celebrate, we are adding an additional competition: the Troybery Challenge! The middle school media specialists are challenging students to read as many of the former Troybery award nominees and winners as possible. Students can sign up in the media center during the month of October to take this Challenge. When they sign up, they will receive a form to track which Troybery books they have read in the past and during this year. The challenge will run from October 1 to April 1. Parents will have to verify the form by signing at the bottom before the form is turned in at the end. Students who read 3 or more of the 14 former Troybery Award winners will be able to vote for which Troybery winner is the best of all time. One lucky student out of all the middle schools who reads all 14 Troybery Award winners will be chosen to attend the ceremony and announce the "Best of the Best" Troybery Award. Of course, there will be drawings for prizes for those who participate! See the entry form for details. You can find a list of all of the Troybery books here. Please encourage your child to take part in this exciting challenge! Lessons in the Media CenterOn Open House night, several students helped Mrs. Chatel to decorate the walls and circulation desk with bright colors and inspiring words. It has been a busy two weeks in the Smith media center, as Mrs. Chatel taught all 6th graders lessons on how to use the media center and how to be a good digital citizen (i.e. an upstanding member of our online community). Since the 6th graders are the first ones to be part of the iPad One2World program in Troy, teachers thought that it was incredibly important for students to learn how to be responsible iPad users and how to act when they are using technology. Students used a Visible Thinking strategy called a "Chalk Talk" that enabled them to consider each of the rules of Digital Citizenship. At the end of the lesson, students signed a poster pledging to follow the six rules. Mrs. Chatel also gave students an assignment to use the app Skitch to portray what they had learned from her lesson that day. Upcoming Events

A warm welcome from your media specialist, Mrs. ChatelIt has been a wonderful start to the school year in the Smith Media Center. As the word spread around the school, students rushed in to see the fantastic new furniture purchased for us by the Smith PTO. I truly appreciate every donation that you made last year to make this project possible--I was almost brought to tears witnessing the excitement in the media center when students raced to try out the new sofa and bouncy chairs. Now, the media center is a place where students are spending their lunch hour quietly reading books or magazines and working on group projects. Students have been drawn to look at magazines in the new magazine rack, to look at new books on the book display, and to seek out books in the Troybery room. (We are the only middle school in the district to have our own room dedicated to Troybery!) The Smith Media Center is only open on EVEN dates; Mrs. Chatel is split between Boulan Park and Smith Middle Schools. Your child will only be able to check out books on days when Mrs. Chatel is there OR from 7:45-8:10 am when the Media Club opens the media center. Upcoming Events
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! We have a week under our belts, and what a week it was. Boulan Park media center was busy with students checking out books to start the quarter. As you can see below, we had students lined up across the media center. When students entered the media center, they saw changes to the layout, new displays, and a new special collection. When students need to find engaging and interesting nonfiction books each quarter, they can now turn to the NEW Nonfiction Fast shelf, which is organized by AR points. The Boulan Media Center is only open on ODD dates; Mrs. Chatel is split between Boulan Park and Smith Middle Schools. Your child will only be able to check out books on days when Mrs. Chatel is there OR from 7:30-7:45 am when the Media Club opens the media center. Upcoming Events
