Here are all of the exciting things happening in the Boulan Park Media Center this month! 2014 Michigan Notable Book Author Jean Alicia Elster to visit Boulan Park and Smith Middle Schools3/18/2014 Boulan Park and Smith Middle Schools are excited to announce that Jean Alicia Elster – author of The Colored Car – will pay a special visit to the schools on May 2, 2014, for a presentation, book signing and question-and-answer time with students. Jean Alicia Elster is visiting Boulan Park and Smith as part of the Library of Michigan’s 2014 “Michigan Notable Authors Tour.” This year, 20 authors whose engaging works were chosen as 2014 Michigan Notable Books selections will visit nearly 50 libraries throughout the state. Ms. Elster will speak to sixth graders at Boulan Park Middle School from 9:30-10:30 a.m., followed by a book signing and “Lunch with the Author” for students who purchased the book. At Smith Middle School, students who purchased the book are invited to “Dessert with the Author”; the presentation will take place from 1:00-1:55 pm, with the book signing to follow. For more information about the book, please visit the author's website. Formerly an attorney, Jean Alicia Elster now writes fiction for children, middle graders, and young adults. She is also an editor, essayist, writing instructor and grant writer. Elster is the author of the novel Who’s Jim Hines?—for ages 8 and older—published by Wayne State University Press. Released in August 2008, it is in its second printing (2009). Who’s Jim Hines? was selected as one of the Library of Michigan’s 2009 Michigan Notable Books. In addition, the Michigan Reading Association placed Who’s Jim Hines? on the Great Lakes Great Books Award 2009-2010 ballot for grades 4-5. Who’s Jim Hines? was also a ForeWord Magazine 2008 Book of the Year Award Finalist in the category of Juvenile Fiction. “It’s a treat to have Ms. Elster visit two of our Troy middle schools to share The Colored Car with our students,” said Mrs. Christina Chatel, media specialist at Boulan Park and Smith Middle Schools. “Based on her family history, Ms. Elster’s book brings to life downtown Detroit in the 1930s and sheds light on the racial problems that some Detroiters faced at that time.” Michigan Notable Books is designed to promote reading and raise awareness of Michigan’s literary heritage. The program annually selects 20 of the most outstanding books published in that year – titles that are reflective of Michigan's diverse ethnic, historical, literary and cultural experience.
“This year’s Michigan Notable Books delve into wonderfully diverse topics and offer something of interest for just about everyone,” said State Librarian Nancy R. Robertson. “The tour offers the opportunity for book enthusiasts in many corners of the state to join in the conversation about what constitutes ‘great writing’ and to hear from some of the Great Lakes region’s most beloved authors.” In addition to the tour, the Library of Michigan Foundation will host a “Night for Notables” on Saturday, April 26 with Edgar Award winning author Steve Hamilton as the featured speaker. For more information about the evening program taking place at the Library of Michigan in downtown Lansing, visit www.michigan.gov/notablebooks. The 2014 Michigan Notable Books program and tour are made possible thanks to the generous support of the Library of Michigan, the Library of Michigan Foundation, Michigan Department of Education, the Michigan Humanities Council, Meijer, and the Michigan Center for the Book. Media Sponsors are Mittenlit.com, City Pulse, Dome, Queue Advertising and Tom Gennara Photography.
