Surprise. A BIG surprise. This was all Mrs. Christina Chatel talked about in the weeks leading up to the 16th Annual Troybery Award Ceremony. In the end, the Troy middle school media specialists Mrs. Chatel and Ms. Kathy Loch delivered. Thirty lucky students from each Troy middle school who participated in the Troybery reading program attended the Ceremony on April 29, 2016, at the Board Room. The Ceremony, televised live across the district, normally showcases student projects and is hosted by students from each school. The Troybery Award winner is announced, as well as the runners up.
Kim Bradley answered questions of students in the audience and even shared about her sequel to The War That Saved My Life, which brought cheers from the audience.
Thank you to our supporters! Many thanks to the middle school teachers and administrators who have been so supportive of this reading program for the past 16 years. We are also grateful to the PTO of each middle school, the Troy Women's Association, and the Board of Education for their support. The Troy Public Library has been instrumental in getting Troyberys into the hands of our students when the media center's shelves were empty. Thanks to Zoyo Yogurt, who provided a free frozen yogurt to all students who voted. Finally, we thank the 974 students and staff who participated in the program!

The 2016 TroyberysWe are nearing the end of the Troybery program at Troy School District middle schools. In order to vote, students must read at least 3 Troyberys from the 2016 list by April 13. Voting will take place on Wednesday, April 13, at Boulan and Thursday, April 14, at Smith during all hours. ELA teachers will send students who are eligible down to the media center to vote. As an incentive to participate, we will be handing out prizes to students who read 3 or more Troyberys. Those that read ALL ten Troyberys will receive a special prize PLUS will be able to attend an exclusive pizza party during lunch in May! Encourage your child to read all ten to receive this honor. Encourage your child to submit a Troybery project! The 16th Annual Troybery Ceremony will be held on Friday, April 29, at the Services Building. 32 lucky students from each middle school will be chosen to attend from those who voted. This wonderful event will be hosted by student emcees from each middle school; they will be presenting students from the four middle schools who have created Troybery projects and will be asking trivia questions to those in the audience. Also, students' names will be drawn from the registered Troybery voters to win $25 Barnes and Noble gift cards. Students across the district will be able to watch the ceremony live on Troy-TV and find out which book is the Troybery winner! We are looking for student work to showcase at the Troybery ceremony! Please see the following document. Troybery 2016 Projects are due to Mrs. Chatel by March 31. We will choose a few projects to use during the ceremony, and those students will be chosen to attend!

Thank you for your support of reading and the Smith Media Center! Sixth grader Rylan Howard was the first in line outside of the Smith Media Center at 7:30 A.M. on Tuesday, January 12, a full fifteen minutes before the library opened. The reason? He wanted to be the first to get his hands on Crown of Three, a 2016 Troybery Award nominated book. "I didn't like reading in fifth grade," said Rylan, "but now I do, and I really wanted to read Crown of Three because it sounded so good."
In its sixteenth year, the Troybery Program began as a way for the Troy middle school media specialists to encourage students to read and vote on what they thought was the best book of the previous publishing year, instead of adults choosing the best books for awards like the Newbery or Caldicott. To date, over 1,300 Troy students and staff have signed up to participate! Students are encouraged to read at least three of the ten books. Reading three or more qualifies a student to vote on which book he or she thinks is the best book of the group. Voting will occur at each middle school during the week of April 11, and the book with the most votes will receive the prestigious Troybery Award. The three runners-up will be named Troybery Honor Books. Troybery incentives include prizes for students who read three or more books and a special prize plus an invitation to an exclusive pizza party for those that read all ten titles. Award winners will be announced at the Troybery ceremony on April 29, 2016, at the Board Room. Thirty lucky students who participated in Troybery from each middle school will be chosen to attend, and student emcees will run the ceremony. For more information and a list of the titles, see Mrs. Chatel's website. New this year: Schoology Discussion GroupStudents are encouraged to join our Smith Media Center Schoology Discussion Group. Mrs. Chatel will post weekly discussion questions about Troybery and will randomly select students who participate to receive prizes. See the signs in the media center for the code to join. Thanks to our sponsors! The Troybery Program could not be such a huge success without the support of Troy staff, parents, and the community. Every year, the PTOs at each middle school give a generous donation to help defray the cost of Troybery books; in addition, this year the Troy Women's Association donated funds. The Troy Public Library is a continual supporter of Troybery, purchasing multiple copies of Troybery books so that students have another place to check out a Troybery when there are none to be found at the middle schools.
Students began gathering outside of the Boulan Park Media Center at 7 A.M. on Monday, January 11, a full thirty minutes before the library opened. The reason? They wanted to be the first to get their hands on a 2016 Troybery Award nominated book! As the doors opened at 7:30 A.M., the atmosphere felt like Black Friday as students stampeded in to grab a Troybery book before they were gone. If they missed the morning rush, they could try to get one of the 200 copies when Mrs. Chatel put some out each class period. Finally, thank you to Troy School Life for covering our event and sharing their photos with us! Mrs. Chatel Returns to the Media Center! It's been wonderful to be at home the past few months with Edmond Anthony, who was born July 3, but I am excited to be back in the Media Center and to share my passion for books and technology with your child! For those of you who don't know me yet, I am Mrs. Chatel, your child's media specialist. This is my third year in the library; I am at Smith on even dates and Boulan on odd dates. When I tell people that I am a school librarian, many think that my job consists of helping students find books and then shelving the books. However, the librarian of the 21st century does so much more than that! I have wonderful parent volunteers who shelve the books for me, enabling me to spend my time advising students on what books to read, collaborating with teachers, or teaching lessons. Your son or daughter will be coming to the media center this year to learn about the research process, which includes how to avoid plagiarism, cite sources using EasyBib, utilize research databases, create a bibliography, among other valuable skills. I also aid teachers by co-teaching technology lessons on how to use certain websites and apps. Your child's iPad will be an essential tool in the media center, whether it is to find books using our library catalog app, Destiny Quest, or to do research and create a final product. Of course, much of my job centers around helping students find the right books. (I am so passionate about reading that I named my son after Edmond Dantes, the famous protagonist of The Count of Monte Cristo!) I have several book recommendation lists on my website, as well as special collections and displays in the media center to attract students to read. It is always important to be aware of what your child is reading and to discuss books at home. Many events in the media center support students' love of reading. See below for the schedule for this year! I look forward to working with your child for the rest of the school year. Please contact me if you have any questions. 2015-2016 Media Center Events
