On Thursday and Friday, April 16 and 17, a record number of students in the Troy Middle Schools lined up to vote for their favorite 2015 Troybery book. If students participated in the Troybery Challenge, where they read as many of the former Troyberys as they could from October to April, they were able to vote for the Best Troybery Winner from 2001-2014. Students who had registered and had read three or more Troybery books were eligible to vote. These students received a stylus pen as a gift for participating. The students who read all 10 Troyberys will soon be receiving a gift and an invitation to a celebratory pizza party, where we will Skype with 1st Runner-up author Dianne Salerni! Friday, April 24 was the big day--the 15th Annual Troybery Awards Ceremony! 30 lucky students from Boulan Park and Smith traveled to the Troy District Services Building. They joined students from Baker and Larson in a student-led ceremony celebrating not only the 2015 Troyberys, but the 15 year history of the Troybery Program. Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education Mr. Mark Dziatczak started off the ceremony, introducing the guests and speakers, as well as entertaining the audience with his comments about this year's Troybery books. Our emcees included Wynter Guilbault, 8th grade (Larson), Saumit Kukkadapu, 8th grade (Baker), Eric Ma, 8th grade (Baker), Gee-Ro Policarpio, 8th grade (Smith), Andy Feng, 7th grade (Boulan). Gee-Ro and Andy were chosen as emcees because they read the most Troybery books out of anyone at their school. Each emcee announced the three winners from each school of the Troybery gift baskets. They also asked trivia questions and introduced the students that presented Troybery projects. Baker student Saumit Kukkadapu, who read all 130 books in the Troybery Challenge, announced that The Hunger Games had won the Best of the Best Troybery Award, to huge applause in the audience. Representatives from Smith and Boulan presented poems, essays, and videos. Shown above: Shivani Konduru, 8th grade (Boulan), Ria Ma, 6th grade (Boulan), Richard Yang, 6th grade (Boulan), Jyothsna Musunur, 6th grade (Smith), Hannah Krebs, 6th grade (Smith), Melissa Collins, 8th grade (Smith), and Michelle Li, 8th grade (Smith). And the winner is...The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare! First runner-up: The Eighth Day by Dianne K. Salerni Second runner-up: All Four Stars by Tara Dairman Third runner-up: Tesla's Attic by Neal Shusterman Many thanks to the middle school teachers and administrators who have been so supportive of this reading program this year and all of the previous years. We are also grateful to the PTO of each middle school, the Troy Women's Association, and the Board of Education for their support. The Troy Public Library has been instrumental in getting Troyberys into the hands of our students when the media center's shelves were empty. Thanks to Zoyo Yogurt, who provided a free frozen yogurt to all students who voted. Finally, we thank the 959 students and staff who participated in the program!
